Following the publication of the above article, an interested reader drew the authors' attention to the fact that, regarding the light microscopic cellular images shown in Fig. 2A on p. 1735, the '100 μM' and '500 μM' (MPP⁺) data panels contained an overlapping section, such that data which were intended to show the results from differently performed experiments had apparently been derived from the same original source.

The authors were able to consult their original data, and realize that the data panel shown to represent the 100 μM MPP⁺ experiment had inadvertently been copied across to show the 100 μM MPP⁺ experiment. The revised version of Fig. 2, now showing the correct data for the '500 μM' data panel in Fig. 2A, is shown on the next page. The authors confirm that the error they made in compiling this figure did not have a significant impact on either the results or the conclusions reported in this study, and all the authors agree with the publication of this Corrigendum.
