Dr Gasparello's research activity was mainly focused in the study of microRNAs. She has developed a series of protocols for the regulation of microRNAs in a multiple genetic (beta thalassemia, cystic fibrosis ) and oncological diseases, including glioblastoma and colorectal cancer. In addition, she has proposed a series of miRNA-based and miRNA-targeting molecules with potential anticancer activity at the pre-clinical level. In recent times, the primary focus of her research efforts has been on the field of gastrointestinal molecular pathology. Her research activity is focused primarily on the analysis of prognostic and predictive markers in rare cancers, including biliary tract cancers (cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder cancer). Her research is primarily focused on the molecular characterisation of rare neoplasms, employing genomic and transcriptomic approaches to elucidate their genetic underpinnings and biological mechanisms.
