Senior Deputy Managing Editor

Location: London UK

Description:The jobholder is required to assist the Managing Editor to direct and oversee the editing and publication of their journal through the leadership of a team of first and final readers, ensuring operational adherence to the organisation’s working methods, procedures and systems..

Responsibilities:

  • Leading a team consisting of first and/or final readers and the journal DME, including the provision of editorial and management support
  • Evaluating the output of first and final readers, providing feedback on this output and preparing progress reports.
  • Delivering one-to-one meetings with team members to provide support and discuss progress.
  • Performing the first/second edit of articles, ensuring the production of a well written and consistent articles.
  • Ensuring that team members are adequately trained, mentored and coached the required standard.
  • Acting as final arbiter of production values for the journal, including overseeing consistency with the in-house style.
  • When required, checking factual content and where necessary, raising queries with his/her Managing Editor.
  • Confirming potential problems with plagiarism, animal ethics, patient consent and figure manipulation, and alerting the Senior Editor or Senior Executive Editor to potential issues.
  • Additional tasks such as peer reviews if required.
  • Deputising for Managing Editor in their absence.

Experience requirements

      • A degree in the biological sciences.
      • Final reading experience.
      • The ability to demonstrate how to manage a team of scientific editors .
      • The capability to lead and motivate teams.
      • The ability to maintain a level of scientific knowledge appropriate to the role.

Managing Editor

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Day to day handling of the journal
  • Leading a team of Deputy Managing Editors and Scientific Editors/Scientific Copy Editors, including the provision of editorial and management support.
  • Evaluating the output of Scientific Editors/Scientific Copy Editors, providing feedback on this output and dealing with productivity issues.
  • Delivering one-to-one meetings with team members to provide support and discuss progress.
  • Monitoring attendance and absence.
  • Performing regular evaluations of Scientific Editors/Scientific Copy Editors. Ensuring that feedback reports are correct and delivered in a timely fashion.
  • Performing the first/second edit of articles, ensuring the production of a well written, consistent and factually correct paper.
  • Ensuring that new and existing team members are adequately trained, mentored and coached to an acceptable standard.
  • Evaluating Scientific Editors/Scientific Copy Editors in training prior to independence.
  • Evaluating the performance of copy editors prior to the 6-month probation period.
  • Conducting interviews for internal positions and exit interviews.
  • Liaising with Managing Editors and the Senior Production Editor
  • Acting as final arbiter of production values for the journal, including overseeing consistency with the in-house style
  • When required, checking factual content and where necessary, raising queries with the Deputy Editor in Chief (UK)
  • Confirming potential statistical issues for correction by the authors.
  • Confirming potential problems with plagiarism, animal ethics, patient consent and figure manipulation, and alerting the Senior Executive Editor or Deputy Editor in Chief (UK) to potential issues
  • Adapting to a range of one-off tasks as and when requested by the Deputy Editor in Chief.


Education, qualifications, knowledge

Science degree or equivalent (PhD preferred).

Skills

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Mac OS
  • Exceptional organisational skills
  • The ability to work well under pressure.


Experience

Scientific Copy Editor:

Do you have a passion for the English language and the ability to comprehend new scientific concepts and ideas? Spandidos Publications are currently searching for a Scientific Copy Editor to join their expanding London-based team. The role will consist of copy-editing technical manuscripts to a high standard and in a timely fashion, in order to obtain clarity and maintain consistency with the in-house journal style. Candidates will be required to oversee the journal production process, including the set-up, proofreading and administration of articles, and also liaise with authors, academic editors and all members of the production team. Therefore, strong interpersonal skills and the flexibility to adapt to any task are a necessity.


Candidates must have a degree in the biological sciences and possess a high level of written English. The position requires meticulous attention to detail and strong computer skills, with knowledge of Mac OS preferred. Although prior scientific copy-editing experience is preferred, this is not essential, as training will be provided to any suitable candidate.

Do you possess an aptitude for interpreting scientific data and the attention to detail required to identify inconsistencies? Spandidos Publication are actively searching for just such an individual to fill the position of Scientific Editor. The role involves checking and clarifying data accepted for publication, and copy-editing articles according to the in-house journal style. Strong interpersonal skills are required, as candidates will be required to collaborate with both the scientific community and internal production team to maintain the high standards of the journals.

The minimum qualification required is a PhD in the biological sciences, with additional postdoctoral or other experience preferred. While a high level of computer literacy is essential, knowledge of Mac OS would be advantageous. The ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate excellent written English skills and strong organizational and time-management capabilities. Prior editorial or publishing experience is desirable, but not essential, as training in copy-editing will be provided to suitable candidates.

Commissioning Editor:

As a Commissioning Editor for Spandidos Publications, you will be responsible for ensuring that our journals are the best in their fields by commissioning high-quality articles in order to maximize subscription revenues and enable the company to maintain its current high standards. This process will involve handling content administration both pre- and post-acceptance, and corresponding with other editors, authors and internal colleagues, so a successful candidate must be able to amass new contacts while maintaining existing working relationships.

The other main element of this role is editorial development. Strong writing skills and a high-level of computer literacy are essential to ensure that submitted manuscripts are set up, proofread and copy-edited to the in-house journal style. As a commissioning editor, you must be able to switch easily between commissioning and copy-editing duties, and possess the flexibility to engage in other independent tasks.

The minimum qualification for this position is a degree in the life sciences, with knowledge of Mac OS a plus. Training in scientific copy-editing will be provided, however, prior experience would be an advantage. This role requires that you are able to work unsupervised and produce tangible results, even under pressure.

In addition to core Java programming skills you should be familiar with Spring (Core, MVC and Security), Hibernate and have a good knowledge of web technologies (HTML, CSS & Javascript).
